A DISABLED gran says she was left humiliated by a supermarket security guard while out shopping for groceries.

Karen Reece-Buck, who uses a wheelchair or walking sticks, was shopping in the Lidl store on Colne Road, Burnley on Friday evening.

The 55-year-old asked the security guard if she could take the basket she had been using out of the store so she could put her bags in her car.

But he refused, before, she says, proceeding to loudly humiliate her in front of fellow customers.

Ms Reece-Buck said: “I went to Lidl on Friday night.

“I usually take my wheelchair but only needed a few bits so went in using my sticks."

She added: “I took my shopping to the till and it was very busy and there was only one member of staff on so I was a bit nervous about holding up the queue. Then when I asked if I could take my basket out to the car, the security guard said no.

“I tried to tell him I couldn’t steal it as I had a broken back and couldn’t walk far but he refused and said it was ‘company policy’ not to let the baskets out of the store.

"He also said he wouldn’t help me when I told him I couldn’t carry the bags.”

Ms Reece-Buck, a former personal trainer, broke her back in an accident two years ago.

She said the security guard then began to “bad-mouth” her to other customers, which left her embarrassed and on the verge of tears.

Customer Callum Krzysik, 28, who saw the exchange, said: “I was standing in the queue and overheard what was happening and could see she was struggling.

“The queue was massive, there was only one person on the till and I could tell she was upset.

“The security guard said, ‘I don’t care if you’re the Queen, you’re not taking that basket outside’. His behaviour was disgusting.

“The whole shop could hear what he was saying and no-one was doing anything to help her so I offered to carry her bags.”

“This was unacceptable. They need to use common sense rather than ‘company policy’.”

A spokesman for Lidl said: “We always aim to provide our customers with the best possible shopping experience and were extremely sorry to learn of this matter.

“We can confirm it is being investigated as a priority and will be addressed with the security firm that we work with.”
