TODAY’S photograph from the Lancashire Telegraph archives shows traffic lights which had been installed at the Wilpshire Hotel junction.

But residents still had concerns about the junction, which is pictured on January 29, 1971.

They said there was still a hazard because buses stop a short distance from one of the signal posts.

The lights were badly needed at the tortuous junction of Whalley New Road with Ribchester Road and Hollowhead Lane.

First motorists using the lights - the new system came into operation overnight - found a difficulty when buses travelling towards Blackburn used the scheduled stop opposite Wilpshire, when the lights were in their favour.

Following traffic overtook the stationary buses and narrowed the road left for traffic sweeping round a bend in the opposite direction - with the lights in their favour.

Formerly known as The Red House, the Wilpshire Hotel remains here today and is the only pub in the village of Wilpshire.

Wilpshire is also known for its golf club which was founded in 1890.

Originally it was a nine-hole course but extended to an eighteen-hole course in 1907. James Braid was commissioned to redesign the course. Most of the reconstruction took place before 1924. In 1995 the course was altered by a new 17th hole.
