A 59-YEAR OLD woman has been left fighting for her life after being hit by a car.

Police were called to Milnshaw Lane in Accrington just before 3pm on Sunday after the woman was hit by a Ford Focus CC.

The road was closed from the Argyle Street junction to the Whalley Road junction for around three hours.

The woman was air lifted to Royal Preston Hospital and remains in a critical condition.

The driver of the Ford stopped at the scene.

A Milnshaw Lane resident said: “I saw her lying on the floor as the paramedics turned into the road.

“It looked really bad.

“I do hope she’s okay, it sounds like she’s in a bad way.

“It must be awful for her family right now.”

Another Milnshaw Lane resident said the road is well-known for being dangerous.

She said: “There’s been a lot of crashes and people getting knocked down here.

“The Whalley Road junction is really bad, there’s about six roads that all filter into it, and it's on a hill so it makes it harder to see.

“We’ve tried to campaign to have lights, or a crossing put in but nothing has ever come of it.

“The road must have reopened at around 6pm or so, it was closed for ages.”

Divisional response inspector Ilyas Mohmed, said: “At this stage we don’t know the full details of what happened but an investigation is under way and we are appealing for witnesses or anyone with any information to come forward.”

Sergeant Oliver Jones said: “The collision has left the woman in a critical condition.

“We’re investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident and would urge anyone who saw it, to come forward.”

Anyone with any information should contact the investigating officer, Sergeant Jones, on 101.
