THE Royal Spice's failure to adhere to food standards was so extensive that when council offices visited the premises in Oswaldtwistle after Megan's death, bosses were served with an immediate closure notice.

County hall chiefs have now called on other food businesses to take heed of the case and to clean up their act.

Cllr Albert Atkinson said: “I want this to be a warning to all food businesses to make sure they do everything in their power to get food safety right.

“Lancashire County Council takes the enforcement of food law very seriously. Our officers work tirelessly with businesses to ensure they understand how they must comply with the law, and provide safe food for their customers.”

Mohammed Abdul Kuddus, 40, and Harun Rashid, 38, were found guilty of manslaughter by gross negligence and both convicted of health and safety offences.

Karen Tonge, from the Crown Prosecution Service, said: “Megan Lee was a young girl with her whole future ahead of her but her life was cut short by these men who failed to protect her as their customer.

“The law required Kuddus and Rashid to take reasonable steps to ensure customer safety and to provide food that was not harmful. Their manifest failures and complete disregard for the safety of customers was astonishing.

“No appropriate systems or conditions were in place to protect Megan or any customer with a known allergy. There was little evidence of any attempt by the defendants to comply with advice and guidance issued to them by the local authority."
