Children from a neighbourhood in Bacup have been exercising their right to protest by demanding the council 'Save Their Trees.'

Donned with placards and signs, the youngsters, who between them live in Pendle Avenue and Coniston Way, took to the streets in the hope of having their voices heard.

At the beginning of the month, a planning application was lodged with Rossendale Council by a Mr Udin, proposing to build four semi-detached houses on the grassland at corner of Coniston Way and Pendle Avenue.

If approved, it will see the removal of all trees on the site, leaving the children with nowhere to play.

At the time, residents in the area voiced their concerns, and on Friday October 19, children on the estate took it upon themselves to stand up to the council and fight for their environment.

Mel Bridge, whose children were part of the protest, said: "I'm so proud of the children for doing this as they've taken responsibility for their environment.

"A lot of young people these days are apathetic but the fact our kids have pulled together in the community to fight for something they believe in is wonderful."

The closing date for objections to be lodged against the planning application was on October 12.

A decision has yet to be made on whether the council will approve the plans.
