TWO leading children's authors have launched this year’s Fantastic Book Awards aimed at encouraging Lancashire schoolchildren to read.

Philip Reeve, writer of 'Mortal Engines; and Sarah McIntyre, creator of 'Oliver and the Seawigs' entertained more than 100 teachers at the event in the Marriott Hotel, Preston.

The initiative, developed by Lancashire County Council’s library service, gives primary pupils a suggested list of books to read and discuss at special clubs before each school nominates its winning entries.

These awards, which until May 2019, and will involve thousands of nine to 11-year-olds.

Cllr Peter Buckley, the county’s culture boss, said: “This tremendous initiative is now running."
