The Royal British Legion were out in force at the weekend, as they made a valiant effort to clean up a town's war graves.

Members of the Accrington branch of the war veterans' charity, along with youth organisations and cadet forces, took scourers and sponges to Accrington Cemetery on Saturday 20 and Sunday 21 October as part of their Every Man Remembered initiative.

Over 100 war graves were cleaned and recorded, and many more unmarked graves were found and uncovered along the way.

MP for Haslingden and Hyndburn, Graham Jones said: "The clean-up is an ongoing initiative of the Royal British Legion and it was good to see so many people there helping to uncover the graves and keep them tidy.

"There were lots of young people in attendance and it was brilliant to see how interested and enthusiastic they were about helping out."

Once they'd been cleaned a cross was placed on each war grave as a mark of respect and to say thank you for the sacrifices made during past conflicts.

A second grave clean-up will take place at Immanuel Church on New Lane in Oswaldtwistle on Saturday 27 and Sunday 28 October from 11am.

A spokesperson for the Accrington Royal British Legion said: "We first suggested this about 12 months ago, and now it's happening.

"Many thanks to the few individuals who have helped and supported us.

"If there are any other volunteers who would want to participate you are more than welcome."
