ROADS could turn icy with a cold snap expected at the end of the week.

Blackburn with Darwen Council's roads team has advised motorists to take care if temperatures as expected with the weekend approaching.

A spokesman said: "Our 2-5 day outlook is indicating sub-zero temperatures on Friday, with the 6-10 day outlook also indicating low temperatures with road hazards possible each night.

"Essentially, make the most of the weather over these next few days because it is turning much colder as we head towards the weekend with cold Arctic winds in the form of a northerly developing.

"It does mention snow but that's considered a profanity in October, but looks like this is across Scotland and the north, with maybe a few surprises down to lower levels too.

"If there is any gritting activity as a result, we will let you know in advance."

The roads team's weather forecast reads: "Breezy again on Tuesday with more in the way of cloud, but remaining dry. Less breezy on Wednesday with a few sunny spells. Fine and largely dry again on Thursday but a band of rain pushing south overnight will herald the arrival of much colder air.

"Cold northerly winds could drive a few showers into the region and these are likely to contain a wintry element over higher ground.

"A cold night into Saturday is expected with road surface temperatures below zero, giving the risk of ice and hoar frost.

"It is very likely to remain cold next weekend and into the start of next week, with winter road hazards possible each night.

"Unseasonably cold air will five increasing risk of wintry showers, primarily over the higher routes."
