A MAN smashed a £500 glass door when he escaped from a store with a £200 coat.

Blackburn magistrates heard Craig Clough was wearing the coat when he was caught stealing £320 worth of fragrances from Debenhams.

And in his efforts to escape for a second time Clough assaulted two security officers by digging his nails into their hands.

Clough, 35, of Carr Road, Darwen, pleaded guilty to two charges of assault, two of shoplifting at Outdoor Action and Debenhams and damaging a door belonging to Outdoor Action.

He was made subject to a community order for 12 months with a six months drug rehabilitation activity requirement, 20 days rehabilitation activity requirement and 60 hours unpaid work.

He was ordered to pay £50 compensation to each of the security officers and £400 to Outdoor Action.

Tracy Yates, prosecuting, said the security officers had suffered minor injuries but it had not been a pleasant incident for them to deal with.

Jonathan Taylor, defending, said his client had issues with both crack cocaine and heroin and realised that he needed help.

"He has got to the point where he realises he is not going to be able to deal with his problem without some professional help," said Mr Taylor.
