A BRAVE battler received hundreds of cards and presents as he was treated to an early birthday celebration.

Charlie Procter, who has fought heptoblastoma for more than two-and-a-half years was also joined by dozens of friends for a party at the Brave Church in Oswaldtwistle.

His mum Amber Schofield, from Church, had arranged the get-together, with all the traditional games, children’s characters and face painters.

Earlier this week the family revealed that Charlie was too ill to travel to America for treatment, not currently available in the UK.

An extraordinary fundraising effort for the £850,000 required for the course in Cincinnati had already raised around £360,000 but his US physician, Dr James Geller, advised against making the trip, after analysing the youngster’s liver and kidney function.

But Ms Schofield was determined to press ahead with the party, though Charlie does not officially turn six until April.

She said afterwards: “We were very overwhelmed with his party. It was perfect.

“We have to face reality sometimes, as much as we are still trying to heal his liver naturally we know in our hearts it may not work.

“This day is something we will treasure forever. The most amazing memories were made today with everyone who loves and cares about Charlie.”

Hundreds of presents and more than 300 cards were posted to Charlie. His family has also appealed for time alone with their boy so the party was, in effect, a chance for his many friends to see him for one final time.

Thanking everyone who attended, and supporters from Brave Church, Ms Schofield added: “Not only have you all given Charlie the best birthday in the world but you have given everyone memories to hold in our hearts forever.

“I will never forget how amazing today has been.”

Pop superstar PINK donated £10,000 to Charlie’s appeal and fashion magnate Umar Kamani, who founded Pretty Little Thing, which has a major base in Burnley, was another significant contributor.

Meanwhile Charlie’s family, while ceasing fundraising, have insisted they will continue to try everything they can to ease his condition, including homeopathic remedies and psychic healing.
