TIMBER windows at a primary school could be replaced with more modern ones.

An application to install the windows at Ashleigh Primary School in Ross Street, Darwen, is to be discussed by Blackburn with Darwen Council's planning and highways committee tonight.

According to documents submitted as part of the application, thinner UPVC window frames will be used to minimise the impact on the 104-year-old school building.

A report going before the committee recommends the application should be approved.

It states: "In understanding the importance of this school within the community it serves, and in trying to minimise the further harm that would be caused to the historic building by replacing the last large arched timber window in the building with UPVC double glazed frames, and to set a standard which can be replicated and enhanced in future renovations of the school, the local planning authority has sought thinner framed mullions and openers minimise to some degree the harm caused by replacing the 12 timber windows."
