A PENSIONER has died after falling ill at the wheel and crashing into a bollard.
The man, who is in his 80s, was driving a blue Peugeot 107 when it crashed near to the old bus station in Broadway, Nelson, at around 1.30pm today.
The man was taken to hospital where he was pronounced dead.
He was the only person in the car and no other vehicles were involved in the incident.
A road closure was put in place to allow paramedics to treat the man at the scene. All roads have now been re-opened.
A police spokesman said: " We were called to Broadway, Nelson, at 1.30pm today to reports that a blue Peugeot 107 has collided with a bollard. A man in his 80s, who was the sole occupant of the Peugeot, has had a medical episode at the wheel. He was treated by paramedics at the scene but was sadly pronounced dead when he arrived at hospital."
His family have been informed.
