COMMUNITY groups in five East Lancashire boroughs have until Friday to apply for grants to break down barriers between people from different cultural backgrounds.

The Near Neighbours Fund provides grants of up to £5,000 organisations that encourage people to join together to take positive social action.

Groups in Blackburn with Darwen, Hyndburn, Rossendale, Burnley and Pendle can apply for the cash from an £80,000 pot administered by the Church Urban Fund.

The grants are available for environmental, social, cultural, artistic and sports projects.

One recipient Blackburn-based Action Factory ran a music project aimed at bringing together people of different faiths and cultures.

Nudrat Mughal from Action Factory said: "It’s been great to see people from 25 different countries and eight different faiths all mixing ."
