A MAN who lives next door to a social club put the windows through because he was fed up with his noisy neighbours.

Blackburn magistrates heard Damien James McKenna used a hammer to cause £1,500 of damage, smashing four large windows at the Poplar Social Club, Accrington.

McKenna, 42, of Wellington Street, Accrington, pleaded guilty to criminal damage.

He was made subject to a community order for 12 months with 20 days’ rehabilitation activity and ordered to pay £500 compensation.

Catherine Allan, prosecuting, said McKenna had admitted to police he had an ongoing dispute with the club about the level of noise when they have a function.

On the day of the incident, Tuesday, August 14, the manageress, Lyndsay Clark, said the club was very quiet with hardly any customers. There was banging on the wall and then on the windows and she put on music to try and block out the noise.

When she returned to the club the following day four large windows had been smashed. A witness had seen McKenna attacking the windows.

The manageress said the club had in place measures which restrict the level of noise and the committee were very aware of their responsibility towards neighbours.

Waseem Chowdhary, defending, said his client had major issues with the noise coming from the club and had contacted the council on numerous occasions.

“On this day he had been drinking and he accepts he lost his temper."
