A FAMILY who halted fundraising for their little boy after finding out his cancer treatment would cost over a million pounds have launched a fresh campaign to raise the money needed to help save his life.

Charlie Procter, of Church, was diagnosed with hepatoblastoma in 2016 and has spent the past two years in and out of hospitals around the country.

But after exhausting all possible avenues for treatment in the UK, his parents Amber and Ben started looking into the option of taking him overseas in a bid to save his life.

The couple found a hospital and a doctor willing to treat Charlie in Cincinnati, USA, but the heartbroken pair were left in despair last month when they found out the treatment would cost almost a million pounds.

Daunted by the huge sum, his mum Amber Schofield announced that fundraising efforts would come to an end as the amount was just too large. But after taking stock, friends and family of Charlie have come up with a new scheme in a last attempt to get the little boy the help he needs.

Coins For Charlie, said family friend Louise Naden, hopes to get people donating as little as £2 – or the price of a takeaway coffee – to help get Charlie to the US.

She said: “His treatment plan has been discussed and is in place, but the transplant and treatment needs to be paid upfront in full prior to Charlie’s arrival.

“The doctors are ready to start treatment on Charlie which is treatment not available in the UK.

“Whilst we appreciate life is busy and money is tight for many people, Charlie urgently needs your help, a £2 donation from 500,000 people.

“This is where you can help, would you consider donating the money you may spend on your daily coffee or daily treat for just one day to Coins for Charlie?”

Since launched at the start of October, the page has garnered support 187 donors, raising a total of £1,513. But this isn’t even one per cent of the total needed.

Ms Naden added: “He does not need to be in the statistics of a child lost to rare cancer, he just needs your help, the money you would spend on one day’s treat.

“You do not need to know Charlie or his family personally to donate, you just need to care.”

While the fundraising efforts continue, Charlie’s family and friends are keen to create as many magical memories together as possible, and family have just returned from a break away to Greece.

Ms Schofield said: “Charlie is absolutely loving it here in Greece. His words were ‘I want to live here forever’.

“Being here honestly feels like we have no problems. I kept inside how I really felt about the holiday. I cried and worried it wouldn’t be enjoyable due to reason we were going.

“I thought I’d be constantly keeping track of ‘his lasts’ and wondering is this his last swim, his last beach trip, but I can tell you all now we’ve not been this happy in a long time and if we are feeling like this then what must Charlie be feeling!”
