Fire crews from four stations were called to a blaze in a derelict building this afternoon.

Two fire engines from Blackburn, along with crews from Darwen and Hyndburn attended the incident in Oakenhurst Road, Blackburn at around 2.40pm.

The fire in the two storey building was treated as a persons reported incident following a 999 call from a neighbour who said they'd seen smoke coming from the property after four youths entered and only two came out.

Four firefighters in breathing apparatus were committed to carry out a full search.

A fire service spokesman said: "The incident was treated as persons reported and crews carried out a full search and were satisfied when they didn't find anything.

"A small room was burnt out inside and the police are investigating the incident."

One hosereel was used to extinguish the fire along with a positive ventilation fan to remove smoke from the building.

Firefighters remained at the scene for around an hour and a half and police were called to secure the premises.

A spokesperson for the fire service said: "We would like to remind the public, and youths in particular, of the dangers associated with playing in derelict buildings, such as asbestos and holes in floors.

"We would urge anyone thinking of doing so to refrain from such activity."
