A WOMAN turned to shoplifting to fund her heroin addiction. Blackburn magistrate heard at the time Leanne Heys was using four £10 bags a day and receiving benefits. Heys, 29, of Dean Street, Padiham, pleaded guilty to seven charges of shoplifting. She was made subject to a community order for 12 months with 20 days rehabilitation activity requirement and nine months drug rehabilitation requirement. She was fined £50 and ordered to pay £241 compensation and £85 victim surcharge. Passing sentence District Judge Huw Edwards said there were a significant number of offences. "It appears you want to challenge and defeat the problems that have beset you over a number of years," he said. "The orders are there to help you but it is up to you to comply." The court heard Heys had dramatically reduced her heroin use and was determined to get off it altogether. "She genuinely wants to make changes to her life," said Ben Leech, defending.
