AN ACTOR from the hit TV show Shameless was thrown into custody after a late night punch up in an Isle of Man chip shop.

Jody Latham, who plays Lip Gallagher in the series, spent a day-and-a-half in the cells after being arrested for provoking behaviour.

He was in the island for his niece's christening, but was unable to attend the service as a result of his arrest.

Officers were called to a fish and chip takeaway, in Douglas, at 3.40am on Sunday.

Latham's victim said he had been punched in the face while queuing and gave police the actor's description.

The man suffered a bloodied nose and Latham was arrested.

He appeared in court on Monday and admitted a charge of provoking behaviour.

Latham, of Moorgate Road, Barnoldswick, told police he had been in Douglas with friends and left a drink unattended while dancing in Colours Nightclub, also on the Douglas seafront.

The actor believed his drink may have been spiked.

Latham admitted a charge of provoking behaviour. A further charge of assault was withdrawn by the prosecution.

"I would like to apologise for the trouble that I have caused," said Latham after he was fined £500.

Latham was also ordered to pay £100 compensation and costs of £106.34.
