Northern Rail and Community Rail Lancashire have worked together with apprentices to make Blackburn station more vibrant and accessible.

The team of apprentices, including 23-year-old Sasha Cooney, worked hard to install 100% recycled benches, planters, and easier to understand signage.

Artwork has also been added to the waiting rooms, as Northern Rail worked with students of St Anne's Primary School and artist Alastair Nicholson to create appealing art.

Brian Haworth, CRL development officer, said: "The apprentices have been excellent working in a team. The point is to get the railway to the community and the community into the railway station."

The signage previously for toilets had only a picture of a man or a woman, but the new signs display a picture of a toilet to make things easier for the disabled and those with dyslexia.

New apprentices will start next year and a similar programme will be launched.
