Tributes have been paid to an East Lancashire man who has died days after being knocked over during Storm Ali.

James Tattersall, 85, is reported to have been celebrating his emerald wedding when he was caught by high winds in Llandudno.

He suffered a head injury, while out with his wife Ann, when powerful winds swept the resort on September 19.

Mrs Tattersall, 79, also suffered minor injuries as a result of the incident but Mr Tattersall, who is said to have hit his head on a pavement, died as a result of his injuries.

Ambulance chiefs confirmed that two casualties were taken to Glan Clwyd Hospital, in Rhyl, as a result of the incident, which happened in Mostyn Street, at around 11.45am that day.

A Welsh Ambulance Service spokesman said at the time: "We responded with one rapid response vehicle, two emergency ambulances and crews were supported by the Emergency Medical Retrieval and Transfer Service (EMRTS) and Critical Care Practitioners."

Police also sealed of the street while paramedics attended to the two victims.

Winds are said to have reached between 70 and 80mph in North Wales as a result of the storm.

Mrs Tattersall thanked the emergency services, and passers-by, for coming to their aid, and hospital staff for looking after her late husband before his death.

She said: "The staff at Barclays Bank brought out a chair and some blankets, and two police officers managed to stem the blood from Jim's head injury.

"I was told later that, if they hadn't done that, he wouldn't have made it to the hospital alive. But I'd especially like to thank from the bottom of my heart a farmer who was dressed in only trousers and a T-shirt, who sat with me and protected me from people who were staring.

"The family would like to thank the emergency services and wonderful staff at Ysbyty Glan Clwyd for helping Jim in his final few hours. They could not have done any more.

"He was not a quiet man by any means. Jim always had something to say and we used to have long discussions about current affairs and so on. He was a very intelligent man.

"What I'll miss is his jokes and companionship. We always had a laugh together. Even though this is a terrible shock, I've just got to get on with it.

Jim would want that.

The couple were said to have been staying at the Ambassador Hotel when tragedy struck.

Mrs Tattersall added: "We both love Llandudno, and have been coming here since our two girls were small.

"We loved walking around the town and along the promenade.

"We were both having a lovely time to celebrate our 55th wedding anniversary.

"Jim had really enjoyed the evening before, as there was a guitarist playing 60s and 70s music at the hotel. He was in his element."

The grandfather-of-four's funeral is set to take place at St Luke's Church in Brierfield next week.
