AN exhibition highlighting the impact of the First World War on the people in Padiham opens on Sunday.

It will complement the current 'Brothers in Arms' display at the town's Gawthorpe Hall which tells of the tragic 1917 deaths of Lawrence and Edward, the two main heirs of its owners the Kay-Shuttleworth family.

The new exhibition outlines how the war affected the Padiham community, the regiments the local men joined, and the story of those who remained at home. It explores the help organised for people left in financial need when the breadwinner of the family had gone to war.

It features the personal stories of servicemen and women, including Sarah ‘Daisy’ Wingham who joined the Voluntary Aid Detachment (VAD) providing nursing care for military personnel. Her four brothers fought in World War One.

It also tells the story of Sergeant Grundy, an excellent local footballer, sadly killed just five days before the war ended.

The exhibitions shows the links the town's people had to the Kay-Shuttleworth family, and how their grief was shared by the wider community.

Entry to Gawthorpe Hall on Sunday is free

Otherwise entrance to the exhibition is included in the normal admission price to Gawthorpe Hall which is £6 for adults and £4 for concessions. National Trust members and children go free.
