AN annual ploughing competition has had to be called off due to poor weather conditions.

Expert ploughmen and women were due to showcase their skills at a contest in Westhoughton this Sunday.

But the recent wet weather would make it difficult to get equipment and vehicles on and off the field at Brinsop Hall Farm, off Manchester Road.

Organisers Blackrod councillor Graham Farrington and his wife Shirley Farrington have decided to postpone the challenge.

Mrs Farrington said: "Unfortunately we have had to postpone the competition due to the poor weather conditions.

"Due to the rain, we would have difficulty getting the lorries on and off the field.

"Our aim is to host the event next Sunday, weather permitting.

"We apologise for any inconvenience caused."

Contestants are invited to attend the rescheduled event on Sunday, September 30. Amateurs are welcome to join in for £10, which will be donated to Bolton Mountain Rescue Team.

The competition will include classes including young farmers, old trackers, classic and wartime. A final championship competition will be held to crown the overall champion.
