GRADE II-listed barns could be converted into three new homes if plans are approved.

An application has been submitted to Blackburn with Darwen Council proposing to turn the barns at Higher Hill Farm, Tockholes, into housing.

A design and access statement submitted as part of the application reads: “Notwithstanding the rural environment and the relationship between residential and agricultural uses within the farmstead, the conversion of the barns to a commercial use would be inappropriate because of the high degree of financial investment and long-term commitment required to preserve the appearance of the Grade II-listed barns without impact on the setting of the adjacent Grade II*-listed farmhouse.

“The use of the barns for residential use is seen as the optimum viable and appropriate use to ensure they are protected for future generations.

“The barns are structurally sound, and the conversions do not include significant additional openings.

“The conversion will include the demolition of modern additions to the buildings and a section of catslide roof to Barn B, which will better reveal its significance,” the statement added.
