PREPARATIONS for the creation of new flood defences in a town are set to take place next month.

As part of preparations for the installation of new flood defences in Padiham, the Environment Agency (EA) is set to carry out some exploratory work in the town in October.

This comes after a £4.9million grant was awarded to Burnley Council in June to protect the town from flooding and improve the look of its central area.

Much of the money will be spent on flood defences along the River Calder and Green Brook to protect the town from any repeat of the Boxing Day 2015 floods which devastated the centre.

Bosses at Environment Agency are expected to carry out a series of ground investigations over the next few weeks, with work expected to start on October 8 and finish on November 16. A compound will also be set up on the former Baxi site a week before the work starts.

Environment Agency staff will be visiting residents who will be impacted by the works on September 25.
