A 36-year-old man was arrested after cops were called to a midnight burglary.

Police were called to Duckworth Street in Darwen at around 3.20am on Monday morning to reports that a number of thieves were trying to steal an ATM.

The machine, which is located next to the Bargain Booze, was left in place as police arrived to the scene as the burglary was ongoing.

One man has been arrested but three others managed to escape.

It is not clear as to whether any weapons were used during the incident.

A woman who lives behind the row of shops where the ATM is located said she was woken at around 4am when she heard commotion coming from the street below her window.

She said: "I was made aware of something going on as its unusual for me to wake up so early, I looked outside and could see four or five police cars parked around the back of the shops.

"There was some shouting and I was worried about what had happened, it was a very unnerving sight to see in the middle of the night.

"I couldn't get back to sleep after that as I wanted to know what was going on but nobody at the time was able to tell me anything."

Police have now confirmed that the four men were attempting to break in to the ATM.

A police spokesman said: "Police are investigating after a burglary in Darwen.
