AROUND 560 tons of steel have been delivered to the £10m Freckleton Street bridge site in Blackburn.

The deck element of the bridge has 93 pieces with 4x1m diameter arches supporting the bridge. The longest beam section of the bridge is 20m in length.

The bridge will be constructed in sections, bolted and welded in position on site, two metres above its final resting place, and then slid into its final position over the main railway line.

The reinforced concrete substructure is already substantially complete and ready to receive the steel work.

The construction period for the bridge is 14 weeks and the sliding of the bridge in to position will take place in early October. It will be lowered on to bearings later next month.

The Sydney Harbour-style dual carriageway will form part of £12m scheme to transform the area with a major new road creating a link from Bolton Road to Barbara Castle Way.
