WHAT'S wrong with the people of Blackburn? Am I of just a small minority who objects to the demands being made by the council regarding the gravestones in Pleasington Cemetery?

Are the rest of you happy to pay your hard-earned cash?

Why should we, when other councils all over the country have been footing the bill for these repairs?

Gosport Council was forced to pay more than £100,000 to reinstate the memorials it had flattened. Did we make the memorials unsafe?

You can bet far fewer would have been earmarked for repairs if they were going to be done and paid for by Blackburn with Darwen Borough Council.

Is there a single councillor brave enough to support us?

Come on, stand beside me and fight these draconian measures. Write to your local councillor or phone them and state your objections.

Incidentally, will Coun Cottam please give me the name of the stonemason who will do these repairs free of charge and if he exists why can't the council employ him to do the work?

The council is happy to pay for pieces of so-called art work around the town despite protests from constituents, but when it comes to doing something of real value it pleads poverty.

It's our money it spends no matter which pot it comes out of. We've paid into it one way or another in taxes. These repairs could, and should, be paid for out of the council tax we all pay and money should have been set aside to do it.

EILEEN EASTHAM, Milton Close, Darwen.
