HIGH flyers from Burnley College have been recognised for their accomplishments at two events.

Science and humanities students were rewarded for their efforts at the department's presentation evening last week.

Those on a range of courses from A Levels to BTEC National Diplomas received certificates with a select few receiving awards and trophies at the Ormerod Road college.

Each of the college departments will hold a presentation evening over the year.

Then on Tuesday, outstanding achievements across the board were celebrated when the college held its most prestigious event of the year, the Awards for Excellence event.

Held at Towneley Hall, the annual event recognises the exceptional sixth form students of the last academic year.

The students and their families were joined by the Mayor and Mayoress of Burnley and other invited guests at the event, where former Burnley College students Charlotte Holden and Farouk Miah had been invited to present the awards.

Those who received awards were chosen for high academic achievement as well as personal accomplishment and success in national competitions, and sportsman and sportswoman of the year gongs were also presented.

Principal John Smith paid tribute to the hard work of students and staff, which led to a perfect A level pass rate for the third consecutive year, and also 100per cent passes at advanced vocational qualifications and for intermediate students. More than 250 students went on to university thanks to their results.

Mr Smith said: "We instituted these new awards three years ago because we are so proud of our young people and what they achieve.

"The awards winners are a wonderful example to other young people including those who will come after them.

"But they also stand for the hundreds of other young people who have achieved so much with Burnley College this year."
