A SHOPLIFTER told police she was stealing "just to get by in life."
Blackburn magistrates heard Stacie Connolly had been surviving on £100 a month after her benefits were sanctioned.
Connolly, 36, of St Leger Court, Accrington, pleaded guilty to stealing clothing worth £100 from Peacocks and stealing foodstuffs worth £105 from Home Bargains, Poundstretcher and Fulton Foods.
She was given a conditional discharge for 12 months and ordered to pay £205 compensation.
Racy Yates, prosecuting, said Connolly told police she sold the clothes for cash so she could buy food for herself.
Paul Huxley, defending, said his client's finances were tight and she felt desperate.
"She couldn't afford to buy food and that was the sole motivation behind these offences," he said.
