THE woman behind a Blackburn festival to get thousands more children reading has been nominated for an entrepreneurial award.

Blackburn-born author Christina Gabbitas’ Children’s Reading Festivals community interest company has been shortlisted for the 2018 NatWest Great British Entrepreneur Awards in the For ‘Good’ category. Christina beat tough competition to make the regional shortlist, with over 2,000 businesses entering.

She said “I feel very privileged to be recognised for the initiatives and work that I have undertaken. Children’s Reading Festival’s mission is to give children from all backgrounds and equal opportunity of attending a literature festival. We need to work together to change the pretentious perception of literature festivals to make them accessible for all.”

Thousands of children took part in the first Blackburn festival in June. The next Blackburn Festival is to be held from June 18 to 22 next year.
