A MAN caught stealing eight legs of lamb from a Blackburn store told police he stole to eat and not for drugs. Blackburn magistrates heard at the time of the offence James Stewart had been evicted because his benefits had been stopped and he couldn't pay the rent. Stewart, 39, of no fixed address, pleaded guilty to theft of eight legs of lamb worth £88 from Farmfoods. He was given a conditional discharge for six months and ordered to pay £88 compensation. Peter King, defending, said drugs were not an issue for his client and his only motivation had been to raise money so he could eat.
