TODAY’s photograph from the Lancashire Telegraph archives shows a British Olympic gold medallist who visited a town.
Everything went swimmingly at the Classic Cinema, Blackburn, when Olympic gold medallist David Andrew Wilkie was guest at the Satellite Club Pop Swap on June 30, 1979.
David is a Scottish former competitive swimmer who was Olympic and Commonwealth Games champion in the 1970s. He won gold in the 200-metre breaststroke at the 1976 Summer Olympics in Montreal
The Olympic gold medallist is the only person to have held British, American, Commonwealth, European, world and Olympic swimming titles at the same time and was the first British swimmer to win an Olympic gold medal since Anita Lonsbrough in 1960.
More than 200 Satellite members turned up for the extra special Saturday morning session to meet David, who drove from Ascot.
An honourary member of the club, David conducted a super swap and brought along his own offering, a book on swimming, which he presented to the first member who could answer a simple question.
David was in Lancashire to promote one of his Swim Along With Wilkie sessions to raise money to help sportsmen.
