ABOUT two years ago I wrote a letter to attempt to get bums off seats' from the Accrington and district public, to support the emergence of a famous football club.

It seemed to work. Attendances were on the up and a cut off/break-even figure of 2,800 was on the cards.

Sadly, it hasn't lasted and the last few days comments from the club don't bode well for the future.

Accrington is, alas, a town situated in the wrong place.

In comparison, Morecambe FC will thrive because of its status, solitude from other places and its fan base will continue to prosper as the season unfolds.

It is sad that a club I have always loved may only survive as a result of the away support to bolster the gates, or if an unknown benefactor digs deep into his pocket and throws a lifeline. The chairman has hinted he fears a 1962 scenario. I hope lightning doesn't strike twice.

The likes of Bury a few years ago were in the depths of financial ruin but they escaped by offering fans of any football club the chance to buy a seat for a tenner. I joined in.

On a general note, it is sad that in comparison to the sixties, when a footballer earned roughly twice that of a tradesman, top players today earn 400 times that.

We may be bottom of the pile at the moment, but there's only one Accrington Stanley and there's only one way they can go - up.
