SMOKE poured out of a Blackburn factory today after an electrical fault sparked off a blaze inside, firefighters said.

Crews from Blue Watch at Blackburn fire station were called to Pioneer Quality Foods, in Birley Street, at around 1.25am.

Firefighters were forced to break the locks at the premises to get inside. They said they heard "popping and cracking" inside and had guessed that an electrical fire was to blame.

Severe damage was caused to the electrical meter and immediate surrounding area and smoke billowed throughout the building.

Engineers from United Utilities were called out to the site, to isolate the electricity supply and firefighters left the scene at around 4.15am.
