A LANDLADY watched on her mobile phone as two men kicked in the front door of the flats she managed for her family.

Blackburn magistrates heard David Johnson, who was responsible for the damage, gave a no comment interview after he was arrested.

But in court he put forward the explanation that he was trying to assist someone inside the flats who had overdosed on spice and was unconscious.

Johnson, 35, of The Salvation Army Hostel, Heaton Street, Blackburn, pleaded guilty to causing £250 worth of damage to a door and lock belonging to Ishret Khalid.

He was ordered to pay £250 compensation and £50 costs.

Tracy Yates, prosecuting, said Miss Khalid was able to view CCTV from the flats on Cardwell Place on her mobile phone. She saw two men kicking in the door and called the police.

She went to the property with her uncle and pointed Johnson out to the officers.

When he was interviewed Johnson told police he didn't remember where he was or why he went to Cardwell Place.

Ben Leech, defending, said as Johnson and his friend were walking past the house someone came to the window shouting for help.

"He says the house has been used by squatters and he recognised two of the people inside," said Mr Leech.

"They said one of their number had collapsed after takingspice and it was feared they were choking on their own vomit."

He said Johnson decided to force the door open and enter the property by which time the unwell man was being sick.

"When the police arrived the owner of the property told them what she had seen," said Mr Leech.

"My client says he did try to explain what had happened but when he was given the formal opportunity he was silent."
