A VEHICLE crime wave has prompted police to step up patrols in a town centre.
Several cars and vans have been targeted in Accrington town centre to steal satellite navigation systems, cash, handbags, gym bags containing sports clothing, ear phones, dash cams, tools and mobile phones.
All the items have been left on show inside the vehicles.
The offenders sometimes use a stone to smash the vehicle window then reach into the car to steal the items.
Officers from the Hyndburn Central Policing Team will now be increasing patrols within the town centre and surrounding areas.
Police said they are 'going to be more visible' in the area in an attempt to crack down on the criminal activity.
Community beat manager PC Graham Hartley has appealed for help for people not to make themselves an easy victim of this type of crime.
PC Hartley has urged people to make sure their vehicles are locked and secure and not to leave items on display.
He said: “Never leave items on display, such as shopping bags, handbags, or coats. Also don’t leave spare keys or sat navs in your vehicle, even in the glove box, as it only takes seconds to steal from a vehicle.
“Many of these crimes are still from unlocked cars so please make sure your vehicle is locked and secure.
"Remember vehicle crime is an occupation for some people so don’t make your vehicle an easy target for them.”
