A PAIENT in a psychiatric unit went on a violent rampage after an all day drinking binge. Blackburn magistrates heard Mark Brendan Duffy hit a police officer on the head with a brick and assaulted three members of staff at the Blackburn facility. And the court was told Duffy had no recollection of the incident because of the amount he had to drink. Duffy, 35, of Fountains Psychiatric Rehabilitation Unit, Pleasington Close, Blackburn, pleaded guilty to assaulting a police officer and three charges of assaulting members of staff. He was sentenced to eight weeks in prison suspended for 12 months and ordered to pay £50 compensation to the police officer and £30 and £25 to two members of the members of staff. Tracy Yates, prosecuting, said staff had been having issues with Duffy leaving the unit without permission and coming back intoxicated. He threw a punch at another resident and when a female member of staff tried to restrain him he grabbed her by the hair and dragged her around. Later in the day he was under the care of two members of staff and butted one on the nose when he refused to let him leave. He later punched another member of staff. "He managed to get to an outdoor courtyard where he started throwing bricks," said Mrs Yates. "He smashed a television with one and when police arrived he hit one on the head with a brick." Shaun Finnigan, defending, said his client had been drinking all day and had consumed three bottles of Jack Daniels, some Malibu and some beers. "He has no recollection of the events but is genuinely upset and remorseful havoing been told what happened," said Mr Finnigan.
