TRIBUTES have been paid to cricket club stalwart who died aged 83.

Bob Bailey, who played for Padiham Cricket Club (PCC) for 40 years, had battled cancer over the past decade.

His condition worsened considerably in the last six months before he died at Royal Blackburn Hospital on August 30.

Friends and ex-professionals have paid tribute to a 'club legend' who died just after the first team picked up the Ramsbottom Cup on August 5.

Club chairman Keith Clayton said: "We are very sorry to hear Bob has passed away, sleep well mate with no more pain.

"Winning the Rammy cup was in no part down to the players' respect for you and all that you did for PCC."

Bob, who was a top order batsman and medium pace bowler, joined the club in 1952 and played for the U18s which included the likes of former president Brian Shirtcliffe.

The 83-year-old, who played a part in the 1960 Championship winning team, went on to captain the 2nd XI later in his career. He also dedicated a large amount of time to junior coaching at the club and brought players through the age groups before managing a highly successful U18s team.

The club said that Bob's team featured some of the best amateurs to ever play for them, including Andy Kelly, Anthony Hall, Gary Pethard, Duncan Hall, Nasser Mahmood and many more.

Following his retirement he went on to become treasurer and then groundsman, a role in which he was highly respected for producing some of the best league wickets throughout the local leagues.

Bob was later made an honorary life member of PCC in 2004.

A spokesman for the club said: "We are deeply saddened to inform everyone of the passing of Mr Bob Bailey.

"Our thoughts are with his wife Edna, his children and his grandchildren at this sad time. Bob will be truly missed by everyone at the club, within local sport and in Padiham town.

"On behalf of the committee and its members, may we pay tribute to Bob but also say thank you for all the hours he gave up for Padiham Cricket Club."

A minute's silence will be observed before Sunday's league fixture against Cherry Tree.
