RIBBLE Valley MP Nigel Evans has won a road safety ward for his work for his work to reduce accidents on rural highways.
The Tory backbencher was yesterday been named Augusts's Road Safety Parliamentarian of the Month by road safety charity Brake and insurers Direct Line.
The award recognises Mr Evans’s efforts to improve rural road safety - a priority issue for Brake as the majority of road deaths occur on these roads.
In recent months he successfully lobbied for a roundabout to be installed at the dangerous Sabden Junction on the A59, and has called for extra government money speed up pothole repairs.
Joshua Harris, Brake's director of campaigns, said: “Nigel’s campaign to tackle speeding on rural roads should be highlighted. The majority of road deaths in Britain happen on rural roads, and the cause is often speed-related."
Mr Evans MP said: “I’m grateful for this recognition which raises the importance of this issue as it is literally life and death, and life changing when governments and local authorities get it wrong.I hope these concerns will now be taken seriously "
