A WOMAN was given a police caution and a teenager is being dealt with by a youth offending team after an incident at a market on Monday night.

A video, posted on social media that attracted more than 2.7m views, showed a police officer appearing to ‘slap’ a teenage girl as he tried to restrain her.

A woman was arrested at the scene for assaulting a police officer.

It is believed the teenager was involved in a large number of youths fighting at the Market Hall on Peel Street, Accrington, when police intervened.

Lancashire Police officials said the incident had not been referred to the Independent Office for Police Conduct.

A police spokesman said: “Following the incident, a 52-year-old woman was issued with a caution and a 14-year-old has been referred to the youth offending team.

“There has been no internal review of the case.”

Two officers were taken to hospital following the arrests, one for treatment for a bite wound to her arm and another for cuts to his head.

Chief Constable Andy Rhodes leapt to the defence of the officers and the ‘open hand strike’ to the teenager as she attempted to grab the officer’s Taser and radio, and said they ‘used reasonable force to bring the situation under control’.
