A FIRE broke out at a shop in Great Harwood.

The blaze happened at Nisa store in Blackburn Road.

Four fire crews attended the scene at around 5.30pm today and have managed to put out the fire.

Watch manager Tony Spencer, of Hyndburn fire station, said there had been a fire in the air conditioning unit that runs the fridges.

It left them 'severely' damaged before the fire spread into a flat roof of the storage area at the back of the shop.

Part of the roof has had to be cut off to stop the fire from spreading.

An area of pavement around the shop had to be cordoned off but firefighters left the scene at around 8pm.

Mr Spencer said: "Four fire engines were called from Hyndburn, Blackburn, Burnley and Darwen.

"The fire happened at Nisa store on the main road and a pavement area was cordoned off.

"We don't know where the fire started but it had been in the air conditioning unit that run the fridges which have been severely damaged by the fire.

"The fire then spread into a flat roof of the storage area at the rear of the shop.

"We had to cut part of the flat roof away to ensure it didn't spread any further."

The cause of the fire is currently under investigation.

Nobody was injured.
