A MAN has been arrested on suspicion of damaging a roof and removing lead from a roof in Accrington.

The incident took place on Blackburn Road in the town centre at midnight.

Watch manager Tom Mellor from Accrington Fire Station said: "We assisted the police in bringing a guy down from the roof of a building who was believed to be removing lead.

"We used an aerial platform to get the man down safely and we were there for about two hours."

John Kennedy, neighbourhood policing sergeant from Accrington, said: "We were called to a three-storey building in the Varsity and Rubys Bar area of the town centre.

"There had been reports of a man on the roof and the fire brigade used a cherry picker to get the man down and he was arrested on suspicion stealing lead from the roof and he is in police custody."
