A WARNING has gone out over a spate of fireworks causing night-time disruption.

Police are reminding residents in Brierfield it is an offence to set off fireworks late at night and in the early hours.

The warning comes after reports of fireworks being set off in the early hours around the town as members of the Asian community celebrate out of town weddings on their late return to the area.

It is illegal to set off fireworks between 11pm and 7am, except on Bonfire Night, when the cut off is midnight, and Diwali, New Year and Chinese New Year, when the cut off is 1am.

The law says people must not set off or throw fireworks (including sparklers) in the street or other public places.

People also cannot buy adult fireworks if they are under 18.

Adult fireworks are category two and three fireworks and do not include things including party poppers.

Category four fireworks can only be used by professionals.

A police spokesman said: "Your neighbourhood police team are very aware of the recent incidents of fireworks being set off in the early hours around Brierfield as members of the Asian community celebrate out of town weddings on their late return to the area.

"We are partnering with the council / mosques / community leaders and our own late night police patrols to try and combat the problem, however if you are celebrating a wedding tonight, or anytime in the near future please respect your community and the law, it is anti-social, it is unwanted, it is illegal and it must stop.

"Don't end up ruining for everyone else what should be a great day .

"Please show others respect you would expect for yourself."
