LANDLORDS of 'bedsit' houses in a borough could face fines of up to £30,000 for failing strict new standards.
Ribble Valley Council is adopting government legislation to regulate multiple-occupation properties from October 1.
From that date landlords who let rooms in houses to five or more people on two or more storeys obtain a license from housing bosses.
The properties will face inspection and landlords risk fines of up to £30,000 and bans if they let sub-standard or overcrowded homes.
Heather Barton, the council’s head of environment, said: “Everyone deserves a decent place to live and the new regulations will protect renters against overcrowded and poorly-managed properties."
