BRITISH Transport Police have deployed extra officers on board trains and at railway stations after this morning's suspected terrorist incident at the House of Parliament.

Ribble Valley MP Nigel Evans, who was prevented from getting to his Commons office by the security cordon thrown round Westminster after a car crashed into pedestrians and security barriers, welcomed the move.

Superintendent Chris Horton said: “We know incidents such as this are likely to cause concern, so our officers will be highly visible both on board trains and at stations.

“We are there to reassure the travelling public so please don’t be alarmed if you see our officers, including firearms officers, on your journey.”

Mr Evans said: "This is the right thing to do to reassure the public and raise security on the transport network at a time of heightened tension.

"Terrorism is all around us and they have struck targets all round the world including in Manchester and at railway stations.

"Parliament is an obvious target and in the 26 years I have been an MP security has become much tighter with armed police and barriers outside the building. Thank-goodness they are there and worked this time.

"I am sure there will be another security review after this incident possibly involving pedestrianising Parliament Square."
