A CARE home has been told to improve after concerns were raised over the safety of its residents.

Church View Nursing Home, Accrington, was given an overall rating as ‘requires improvement’ by Care Quality Commission inspectors.

Inspectors found that people had not always been provided with safe care from the service which was providing personal and nursing care for 28 people at the time of the inspection.

Watchdogs said that many safeguarding concerns and complaints had been raised about the service and had been substantiated by the local safeguarding authority.

A CQC report said that, before the inspection, a number of concerns and complaints had also been raised about staff attitude and behaviour at the home.

The report said: “We saw evidence that people received support with their healthcare, nutrition and hydration needs and were referred to community healthcare professionals.

“However, concerns were raised that this was not always done in a timely way.”

The Princess Street home has been given a ‘requires improvement’ rating for its safety, effectiveness, care and responsiveness, while it’s leadership has been rated as ‘inadequate’.

However, the report also praised staff at the care home as being ‘caring’.

The report reads:” The people we spoke with told us they liked the staff who supported them and told us staff were caring.

“We observed staff treating people with respect during the inspection.

“The people we spoke with and their relatives told us staff respected their right to privacy and dignity and we saw examples

of this during out inspection.

“People told us they were encouraged to be as independent as possible.”

The nursing home said in a statement that they were ‘very disappointed’ with the recent inspection report, but that this unfortunately was reflection of the ‘very challenging and difficult times’ that they have faced.

They said: "We are working closely with CQC, LCC, and CCGs, to make the necessary improvements as quickly as possible.

“I have been appointed as the new manager and my focus will be to drive the home in a more positive direction, our vision is to ensure that our residents are treated with the utmost dignity and respect at all times.

“We do take comfort from the very positive comments in the report and wish to assure all residents and family that we will do what ever it takes to improve our CQC rating at our next inspection.’’
