DOZENS of cafes and restaurants across East Lancashire are now proudly welcoming new mums and declaring themselves as breastfeeding friendly.
And as part of breastfeeding week, the Lancashire Telegraph is lending its support to the campaign to support mums who want to breastfeed.
Below is a list of just some of the places across the region which welcome breastfeeding mums.
In 2010 it became illegal to stop a woman from breastfeeding in any public space, but some mothers are still made to feel insecure about feeding in the open.
And when it comes to breastfeeding, cafe owners have spoken out about the difference it makes to ensure that new mums feel content and comfortable in their surroundings.
Lynn Hitchen, 66, owner of the Lancashire Tea Room, said: “Women have nothing to hide, and our booths are designed in such a way, that mothers find it very comfortable without people looking over them.
“They can also go into the toilets, so it doesn’t have to be on open tables, although, we have had women do that and no complaints have ever been made.”
Lisa Kitchen, 36, front of house staff member at Zest Cafe Lounge, said: “We all agree here that women should feel comfortable.
“We have customers who come and breastfeed and we have never had any problems with it. Nobody has ever complained."
Volunteer and peer supporter for breastfeeding groups in Blackburn Becky Crompton believes it's vital for women to know where they are actively welcomed for breastfeeding.
The mum-of-three said: “I know most women know it is their right to breastfeed anywhere but new mums may not be confident in public.
“It is good to know that mums are made to feel welcome and have supportive staff and that they are not going to be looked at or made to feel unwelcome.
“Mums need to feel comfortable as if they are not relaxed then it can inhibit their flow of milk if they are uptight and stressed.
“It is the most natural thing in the world for a mum to breastfeed her baby.
“Donna Butler who runs the group in Blackburn has been working with cafes and coffee shops to help make people welcome.
“It is a learning curve for new mums so it would be good for them to know they are being looked after.”
In Lancashire, around 70 per cent of babies are breastfed in the first stages, however, after just six weeks, this number drops to 40 per cent. The World Health Organisation wants to encourage more women to breastfeed, as in the first six months it is safer for the baby than formula milk.
As part of the campaign, all of the 'breastfeeding friendly' venues have a sign up to let mothers know they are welcome to breastfeed.
