A DISQUALIFIED driver caught behind the wheel claimed it had been a genuine mistake.

Blackburn magistrates heard Leon Michael Elson had completed a drink-driver programme which reduced his ban.

And when he received his certificate for completing the course successfully he thought he was entitled to drive again.

Elson, 37, of Greaves Street, Great Harwood, pleaded guilty to driving while disqualified and without insurance.

He was fined £185 with £85 costs and £30 victim surcharge and his licence endorsed with six penalty points.

Jonathan Taylor, defending, said his client had made a mistake and fully accepted that.

"He had completed the rehabilitation course which is a sign that he was doing things properly," said Mr Taylor.

"When he got the certificate he thought he could drive again and immediately arranged insurance cover.

"Unfortunately, because he was not in fact entitled to drive that was not valid."
