A LATE decision has been made to cancel a council meeting which clashed with the Three Lions.

Elected members at Burnley Council have agreed to postpone a full council meeting until later in the month because it was due to take place at the same time as England's historic World Cup semi-final.

Councillors were expected to meet and consider updates on the North West Growth Corridor, annual budget and new appointments to committees, working groups and outside bodies at Burnley Town Hall today from 6.30pm.

However the meeting will now be merged with one for Burnley's local plan which is currently scheduled for July 31 because it clashes with the semi-final between Gareth Southgate's men and Croatia - which kicks off at 7pm.

Council leader Mark Townsend said: "We thought about it last week and were prepared to change our decision if England made it through to the semis.

"They did and we made a final decision on Monday morning to move the meeting back.

"There is no urgent business and moved it back to a later meeting, which will be held on July 31."
