TWO women have attended a royal celebration to mark the 70th anniversary of the NHS.

Sheila Ashworth along with a fellow colleague and friend Kathleen Travis attend the Royal Garden Party at Buckingham Palace to celebrate the NHS 70th birthday.

This came about after the Queen requested that any person working at the inception of the NHS on the 5th July 1948 could be invited to attend if selected, which Miss Ashworth (a member of the NHS Retirement Fellowship) was and represented the North West for.

Miss Ashworth worked at Blackburn Royal Infirmary from 1946 - 1990 a total of 44 years.

Mrs Travis also worked at Blackburn Royal Infirmary for 42 years.

About the event they both said: "It was a privilege and an honour to have been able to attend and represent Blackburn's Branch of the NHS Retirement Fellowship."
